How to Stay Motivated When You Don’t Feel Like Working Out
At Train With Danny, our Los Angeles personal trainer knows firsthand that there are a lot of obstacles to maintaining a regular workout routine. There is work, family, kids’ appointments/sports/school, a house to clean, a yard to manage, and tons of other everyday factors that can overwhelm your schedule without adding a workout into the mix.
We have all been there. Some of us are there right now and searched for articles on how to snap out of it and get back into the workout groove.
Here are few tips on how to get started.
Self-Care Sometimes Requires a Pep Talk
So, you don’t feel like working out? How about having a quick, objective chat with yourself?
The European Journal of Social Psychology says giving yourself a pep talk strengthens both actual behavior performance and prospective behavioral intentions when done in the second person.
“You are going to feel so much better after a quick workout session,” is a good way to get started.
Take away the “I” in “I don’t have time” and address yourself from the outside, “Come on, you have twenty minutes!”
Set a Short-Term Goal (For Today)
Like all workout goals – including your right now goal – think about what is realistic and achievable, so you follow through. If you are having the busiest day ever, do not plan to carve out time to get to and from the gym, because you may begin abandoning the idea with every hour that passes.
If the goal right this minute is to find some motivation to work out when you absolutely do not feel like it, turn on some music and start moving around.
Give yourself a half-hour to move, feel the music, and stretch, and then kick it up a notch.
If you are not feeling the music, and just want to get out of your own head, go for a walk or do yoga right where you sit.
Fun Adds Flair to Any Workout
If you are dreading your daily workout schedule, consider mixing it up and taking a kickboxing class, or slowing it down with yoga or tai chi.
You do not have to do the same high-intensity interval training you typically enjoy — especially if you are not really enjoying it — so mix it up, make it fun, and consider joining a group class or playing a sport that allows you to interact with others.
No. I Really Do Not Have Time!
We completely understand that meeting after meeting, and family or at-home obligations can leave truly little time to squeeze in a workout. When that is true, don’t fret.
Simply build in some physical activity throughout the day, including taking the stairs, walking up and down the sidelines at the kids’ soccer game, parking away from the door at your next meeting, and maybe working in a few squats throughout the workday.
